Australian Chess History being made this weekend!
The ACT Chess Association will be hosting the 25th ANU Chess Open tournament at the Australian National University on 29 and 30 July 2017. 65 entrants are expected to compete in the tournament across two divisions, the open and under 1600 divisions.
An interesting political aspect of the event is the participation of Mr. Michael Pettersson MLA at the tournament.
Mr Pettersson is the first sitting member of the ACT Legislative Assembly to ever compete in an official chess tournament in ACT history and is the only Australian politician (federal, state or territory) to have officially competed in 2017, if not in modern Australian political history.
“I congratulate Michael on his ongoing commitment and passion for the citizens of the ACT and in his belief that chess can deliver cost effective benefits and improved public policy outcomes for his constituents,” said John Adams, Treasurer and Government Relations Director, Australian Chess Federation
